Animal Tracks

I love snow days. I am a teacher so snow days for me are bonus days with my family. Another pleasure I glean from a fresh snowfall is checking out the animal tracks around my neighborhood and to see what wildlife has visited my yard.

Red Fox

It has been a lot of fun to track animals through the snow with my children. Usually the tracks run into a fence or get lost in a mix of other animal tracks, cleared snow or human foot prints.

Mourning Dove

Seeing the tracks immediately incites excitement from my young nature lovers and myself too. The first question that comes to mind is usually, what animal left these tracks but from there we wonder just about anything else you can think of: what was the animal doing here? how long was it here? does it like snow the way we do? No matter how you approach it, animal tracks can be a great learning tool for the suburban naturalists out there.

Squirrel? I’m not sure!

I am a married, forty something, middle school teacher and father of four who has always been amazed by the natural world. At this point, in my life, I try to pass on my knowledge and love of nature to my children. Sometimes opportunities to learn and explore present themselves right in our own backyard.
